Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I hear my recordings in the simulator?
The iOS Simulator does not support microphone input, so recordings will be silent. To test recording features, you must use a physical iPhone or Apple Watch device.
How do I enable iCloud sync?
iCloud sync is automatically enabled if you're signed into iCloud on your device. Recordings and transcripts will sync across all your devices signed into the same iCloud account. You can verify sync status in the app settings.
What's the difference between Apple Speech and OpenAI Whisper transcription?
Apple Speech: Free, on-device transcription that works offline. No data leaves your device. Supports many languages.
OpenAI Whisper: Cloud-based transcription that requires an API key or AI credits. Generally more accurate, especially for technical terms, accents, and challenging audio. Requires internet connection.
How do I add my OpenAI API key?
Go to Settings > AI Configuration > Add API Key. Your key is stored securely in your device's Keychain and never transmitted to our servers. You can get an API key from platform.openai.com.
What are AI credits and how do they work?
AI credits are pre-paid access to OpenAI's services purchased through in-app purchase. One credit equals approximately one minute of transcription or one summary generation (actual usage varies). Credits are an alternative to bringing your own OpenAI API key.
Why isn't the "Export to Health" button appearing?
The Health export button only appears when:
1. You're using a physical iPhone (NOT the simulator - HealthKit is not available in simulator)
2. You've enabled Health integration in Settings > Integrations
3. The extraction used a health-related template (Nutrition Tracker, Symptom Logger, etc.)
How do I record on my Apple Watch without my iPhone?
Open the Just Recorder app on your Apple Watch and tap the record button. Recordings are stored on your Watch and automatically transfer to your iPhone when devices reconnect. Your Watch needs sufficient storage space for the recording duration.
Can I use this app to record phone calls?
No. Just Recorder cannot record phone calls due to iOS restrictions. Additionally, recording phone calls without consent may be illegal in your jurisdiction. The app is designed for recording ambient audio, meetings, lectures, journaling, and similar use cases where you have consent.
Why do some recordings have gaps or pause automatically?
iOS may pause your recording if another app requests audio access (like dictation, Siri, or phone calls). The app will attempt to auto-resume after the interruption ends. You can also manually resume from the suspended state. Check the recording details to see interruption events.
How do extraction templates work?
Templates are pre-configured AI prompts designed for specific use cases (nutrition logging, meeting notes, symptom tracking, etc.). When you run an extraction, the AI analyzes your transcript using the template's instructions to extract structured data. You can create custom templates in Settings > Templates.
How do I delete all my data?
To completely remove all data:
1. Delete all recordings within the app (swipe left on each recording)
2. Delete the app from your device
3. Optionally remove iCloud data: iOS Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Storage > Just Recorder > Delete Data
Does the app work offline?
Yes, for recording and Apple Speech transcription. You need internet connectivity for:
- OpenAI Whisper transcription
- AI summaries and chat
- iCloud sync (syncs when connection available)
All other features work fully offline.
How much storage do recordings use?
Recordings use approximately 1.9 MB per hour (M4A format, 16kHz mono, 16-bit). A 1-hour recording is about 2 MB. Transcripts are plain text and use minimal storage. Check your device storage in iOS Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
Why is my battery draining during long recordings?
Background audio recording uses power continuously. For long sessions (2+ hours), consider:
- Enabling Low Power Mode (recording continues)
- Connecting to a charger
- Using your Apple Watch for shorter recordings
- Closing other battery-intensive apps
Can I share recordings with others?
Yes. Tap a recording, then use the share button to export as:
- M4A audio file
- Plain text transcript
- Combined audio + transcript
Share via Messages, Mail, Files, or any app that accepts audio/text files.

Quick Start Guide
1. Grant Microphone Permission
When you first open the app, grant microphone access when prompted. This is required for recording.
2. Start Your First Recording
Tap the large record button on the home screen. The app will record in the background even if you lock your screen or switch apps.
3. Pause and Resume
Tap the pause button during recording. Resume anytime by tapping the recording indicator at the top of the screen.
4. Add Markers (Optional)
During recording, tap "Add Marker" to create timestamped bookmarks for important moments.
5. Stop and Transcribe
Tap the stop button when finished. The app will automatically transcribe your recording using Apple Speech (free, on-device).
6. Generate AI Summaries (Optional)
Add your OpenAI API key or purchase AI credits, then tap "Extract" to generate summaries, action items, or structured data using templates.
7. Export to Native Apps
Enable integrations in Settings, then export nutrition data to Apple Health, tasks to Reminders, or link recordings to Calendar events.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Recording won't start
Solution: Check that microphone permission is granted in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone > Just Recorder
Transcription is blank or inaccurate
Solution: Ensure speech recognition is enabled in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Speech Recognition. For better accuracy, try OpenAI Whisper transcription.
AI features not working
Solution: Verify your OpenAI API key is valid (platform.openai.com) and you have available credits on your OpenAI account, or purchase AI credits via in-app purchase.
iCloud sync not working
Solution: Check that iCloud Drive is enabled in iOS Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Drive. Ensure you have available iCloud storage.
Apple Watch recordings not transferring
Solution: Ensure both devices are on the same iCloud account and within Bluetooth range. Check that iCloud sync is enabled. Transfer happens automatically when devices connect.
Health export not working
Solution: This feature only works on physical iPhones (not simulator). Enable Health integration in Settings > Integrations and grant Health permissions when prompted. Use health-related templates for extraction.
