Just Recorder ("we," "our," or "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal data. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.

Information We Collect

Information You Provide

  • Audio Recordings: Voice recordings you create using the app, stored locally on your device and optionally in iCloud
  • Transcriptions: Text transcriptions of your audio recordings, generated locally using Apple Speech Framework or optionally via OpenAI Whisper API
  • AI Summaries and Insights: Optional AI-generated summaries, extractions, and chat responses when you choose to use OpenAI integration
  • Calendar Events: Calendar event data when you link recordings to calendar events or export data to Apple Calendar
  • Reminders: Reminder data when you export tasks or action items to Apple Reminders
  • Health Data: Nutrition and wellness data when you use health-related extraction templates and export to Apple Health
  • App Preferences: Your settings and template preferences stored locally on your device
  • OpenAI API Key: Your personal OpenAI API key (optional), stored securely in your device's encrypted Keychain

Information Collected Automatically

  • Device Information: Device type, iOS/watchOS version, and app version for compatibility and support purposes
  • Recording Metadata: Recording timestamps, duration, file size, and playback position
  • Usage Patterns: Feature usage, template selections, and app performance metrics stored locally

Health Data (Apple HealthKit)

Important: Just Recorder integrates with Apple HealthKit to read and/or write health data. This data is used solely to provide the app's core functionality and is never sold or shared with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.

We access health data only with your explicit permission. You can revoke this access at any time through your device's Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > Just Recorder.

Health data is processed locally on your device whenever possible. When cloud sync is enabled, health data is encrypted in transit and at rest using industry-standard encryption.

Calendar Access

Just Recorder may integrate with your device's calendar to sync events and reminders. Calendar data is used solely to provide scheduling features and is not shared externally.

How We Use Your Information

Third-Party Services

The app may integrate with:

  • Apple iCloud: For optional cloud sync of recordings and transcripts across your devices (end-to-end encrypted)
  • Apple Speech Framework: For local on-device transcription (processed entirely on your device)
  • OpenAI API: Only when you provide your own API key and explicitly enable AI features (Whisper transcription, ChatGPT summaries)
  • Apple Health: Write-only access to export nutrition and wellness data from health-related templates
  • Apple Reminders: Write access to create reminders from extracted tasks and action items
  • Apple Calendar: Read access for event suggestions, write access to link recordings to calendar events
  • Apple Watch: For independent recording capability via companion watchOS app, synced via iCloud

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data

Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your data at any time through the app settings. Upon account deletion, your data will be permanently removed from our servers within 30 days.

Children's Privacy

Just Recorder is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected data from a child under 13, please contact us immediately.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy in the app and updating the "Last updated" date.

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act, including the right to know what personal information is collected, the right to delete personal information, and the right to opt-out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information.

European Privacy Rights (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation including access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability, and the right to object. Additional Information for Just Recorder

Audio Recording and Background Processing

Just Recorder requires microphone access to record audio. All recordings are stored locally on your device by default. When you enable iCloud sync, recordings are encrypted in transit and stored securely in your private iCloud container.

The app supports background recording, which means it can continue recording even when your screen is locked or you switch to another app. This feature is essential for long-form recording sessions.

Transcription Services

Apple Speech Framework (Default): Transcription is performed entirely on your device using Apple's Speech Recognition API. No audio data leaves your device when using this option.

OpenAI Whisper (Optional): If you provide your own OpenAI API key and enable Whisper transcription, audio files are sent to OpenAI's servers for processing. OpenAI's data usage policy applies to this data. We recommend reviewing OpenAI's privacy policy before enabling this feature.

AI-Powered Features (Optional)

When you enable AI features by providing your OpenAI API key:

  • Summaries and Extractions: Transcripts are sent to OpenAI's ChatGPT API to generate summaries, extract structured data (like nutrition logs, symptom tracking, meeting notes), and answer questions about your recordings
  • Chat Interface: Your questions and relevant transcript context are sent to OpenAI to provide conversational responses
  • Your API Key: Stored securely in your device's Keychain (never transmitted to our servers)
  • Your Responsibility: You are responsible for your OpenAI API usage and associated costs

Important: We never receive, store, or have access to your OpenAI API key. All AI processing is a direct interaction between your device and OpenAI's servers. We have no access to the content sent to or received from OpenAI.

Apple Watch Integration

The companion watchOS app allows you to create recordings directly from your Apple Watch, even when your iPhone is not nearby. Watch recordings are:

  • Stored locally on your Apple Watch initially
  • Automatically transferred to your iPhone when devices are connected
  • Synced to iCloud if you have cloud sync enabled
  • Subject to the same privacy protections as iPhone recordings

Native iOS Integrations

Apple Health: When you use health-related extraction templates (Nutrition Tracker, Symptom Logger, Wellness Journal, etc.), the app can write extracted data to Apple Health. This is write-only access - we never read data from Apple Health. You maintain full control through iOS Health permissions.

Apple Reminders: When you extract tasks or action items from recordings, you can export them directly to Apple Reminders. This requires Reminders authorization, which you can revoke at any time.

Apple Calendar: The app can suggest linking recordings to calendar events (read access) and create calendar entries for meeting recordings (write access). Calendar access can be revoked through iOS Settings.

In-App Purchases and Payment

Just Recorder offers in-app purchases for AI credits (pre-paid OpenAI API usage). These purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive or store your payment information. Purchase history is managed by Apple and associated with your Apple ID.

No Advertising or Tracking

Just Recorder does not contain any advertising, analytics SDKs, or user tracking mechanisms. We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any third parties for marketing purposes. Your recordings and transcripts are yours alone.

Data Export and Portability

You can export your recordings and transcripts at any time:

  • Audio files: Export as M4A files via the iOS share sheet
  • Transcripts: Export as plain text via the share sheet
  • Structured data: Export to Apple Health, Reminders, or Calendar
  • Complete data: All data remains in standard formats accessible through iOS Files app

Data Deletion

You can delete individual recordings, transcripts, or all data at any time through the app. Deleted data is immediately removed from your device. If iCloud sync is enabled, deletion is propagated across all your devices. To completely remove all data:

  • Delete all recordings within the app
  • Delete the app from your device
  • Optionally: Remove iCloud data through iOS Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Manage Storage > Just Recorder

Security Measures

We implement multiple layers of security:

  • All local data stored in encrypted iOS app container
  • OpenAI API keys stored in iOS Keychain with biometric protection
  • iCloud sync uses end-to-end encryption
  • No server-side storage of user data (we operate no backend servers)
  • All third-party API communication uses HTTPS/TLS encryption

Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

Just Recorder is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app includes health and medical tracking features that are intended for adult use or use under parental supervision.
