We're here to help you get the most out of Erie Live.
Public, official sources: AIS ship broadcasts (via aisstream.io's volunteer shore-receiver network), NOAA buoys and CO-OPS water levels, National Weather Service forecasts and marine alerts (shown verbatim), USGS river gauges for the steelhead tributaries, and openly licensed points of interest (© OpenStreetMap contributors). Every reading in the app carries its own freshness stamp.
That's honesty, not a bug. Vessels move smoothly between AIS position reports, but anything that hasn't reported for 15 minutes freezes and dims instead of sailing on plausibly-but-wrong. AIS coverage depends on shore receivers, and not every boat broadcasts AIS.
It's an honest model estimate, clearly labeled as one. Erie Live computes waves from wind and fetch physics, then grades itself against real buoy readings every night. It's a planning aid — always verify conditions with official sources before heading out. Erie Live is a companion, not a navigation tool.
No. The entire core app — the live map, conditions, forecasts, fishing spots, beaches, and the Captain's Brief — works with no sign-in at all. Only the optional social features (crews, sharing your position with friends, catch logging, leaderboards) use Sign in with Apple.
Nobody, unless you explicitly share it. The compass and nearby features compute on your device. If you start a share, only the people you chose can see you, for the window you chose (up to a hard cap of 12 hours), and you can stop it any time. Trips record to your phone and are only uploaded if you share one to your crew.
The spots are publicly documented, typical-pattern areas — reefs, river mouths, and shore spots with species, depth, and season — never anyone's secret mark and never a fake "biting right now." The live part is real: tap a steelhead river mouth for USGS flow and water temperature updated every few minutes.
Long-press (or use the context menu) on any member-visible row — a crew member, leaderboard entry, shared trip or catch, or rendezvous — to Report it or Block the member. Blocking is mutual and immediate. Manage blocks under Settings → Skipper Profile → Blocked.
Settings → Skipper Profile → Delete Account. That removes your member record and everything attached to it — profile, crews, shares, catches, uploaded trips — and revokes the app's Sign in with Apple. You can also email us and we'll do it for you.
